For a poker player that is just beginning and starting to play it can be hard to figure out whether or not you should call or not call. It can be tough when starting out to know when you are ahead and when you are beat. There will be times where you will fold when you should call and call when you should fold. All of this is just part of the game and the experience leading up to becoming a good poker player. Most beginners go through it and it will pass as you gain more experience.

The number one reason why most people call is that they just like to play. Just the fact that you called it doesn’t mean you have a good hand. Many times you will see players that have not paid attention to the first 30 hands say “Believe what your dealt” or “I would have won if I stayed in.” If you are talking about the flop you might want to consider another player just taking a small risk, trying to get a good hand. The problem with that is the player didn’t stay in to get a better hand than the one they were dealt. If they had their thing down and were just playing they might win a small pot, but not much.

If you are not paying attention to your mistakes and the other players’ mistakes, you will call on the first hand, always calling when behind, and calling when ahead. Poker is a game of incomplete information, it is similar to studying a book for a very long period of time, or analyzing a car for fuel. The more information you have the more complete your knowledge will be. Staying in to see the next card because you “QQdewa” is not going to increase your chances of winning the pot. You should call only when you have a very good chance of winning, and only when you are in the blind (betting before the flop) because it is an excellent chance to do so.

Many players like to gamble on certain hands, such as pocket sevens. The odds of a seven hitting on the flop are about 17%. The odds of a pair of sevens, if dealt right, are only about 11%, but a flop of that card has the potential to be a monster. Odds of a flop of those cards are only about 7%.
